Do you ever wish you could just talk to the author about the book you’re discussing? Or hear behind-the-scenes details about how it was written? I love meeting with book clubs, so if your book club would like to schedule a virtual or in-person visit to discuss one of my books, please reach out!
*In-person book club visits restricted to the Kitchener-Waterloo area.

School Visits
“Carolyn’s presentation to our youngest students was a delight. Her story about how she became a writer, the joys, struggles and process of writing and becoming a published author demonstrated for our students that persistence, a growth mindset and the pursuit of one’s passion can absolutely result in the realization of a dream.”
– Karen Moore, WRDSB principal
Kindergarten – Grade 3 (30 minutes in length)
Carolyn’s K-3 presentation encourages participation, questions, and even some singing. She talks about her journey to becoming an author, shares a behind-the-scenes look at how a picture book comes to life, and discusses where her ideas come from. Following a reading of one or both of her picture books, Carolyn leaves students with a writing prompt of their own that they can take back to the classroom. Interactive and inspiring, Carolyn’s presentation is designed to motivate students to follow their dreams and to lean into their imaginations.
Grades 4 – 8 (45 minutes – 1 hour in length)
Geared toward older students (Carolyn has over 18 years’ experience teaching grade 7), this junior/intermediate presentation focuses on developing your craft as a writer and getting words down even when you think you’re out of ideas. Carolyn discusses the different approaches she takes to writing picture books versus novels and shares the details of her dream-come-true journey of becoming an author, as well as some of the unique opportunities that have followed. This presentation is designed to ignite students’ passion for telling stories and to encourage them to stretch their creative muscles. It concludes with a Q&A.
*Workshop option – with smaller groups (1-2 classes)
Carolyn’s writing workshop shares similar features to the hour-long junior/intermediate presentation, but in a condensed format to allow students the opportunity to put pens (or pencils) to paper. Carolyn shares some of her favourite writing prompts and provides on-the-spot feedback to students with the aim of motivating even the most reluctant writers.
